Niskus takes its name from an ancient Celtic water god, whose name survives on a Roman-era inscription discovered on the banks of a river in Southern England.

Dating from the late 4th century, the inscription was written on a small lead curse tablet. It tells the story of a man named Muconius, whose gold and silver coins had been stolen. Nearly 1,700 years later, the name Niskus survives — a forgotten water god from Britain's ancient past.

Having spent years sailing, swimming and surfing in the same waters where the tablet was discovered, the story immediately felt close to home. Our own love of the water, combined with the history beneath it, inspired us to take the name Niskus for our brand.

The connection between Niskus, Neptune and the water also inspired our trident — a symbol that brings together the ancient story behind our name and the waters that continue to inspire us today.

For more than 30 years, we've been drawn to the cold waters of Northern Europe. From the beaches, lakes and waterways of the Lake District, Northumberland, Wales, East Anglia, Devon and Cornwall, to the coasts of France, our love of sailing, swimming, surfing and cold-water sports has grown with us, along with our appreciation for the benefits and simple feeling of being in cold water.
